Abstract
Edward Elgar’s Concerto for Cello and Orchestra in E minor, Op. 85 is the composer’s last major orchestral work – a piece full of tragedy and a sense of farewell. From the end of life, the journey leads back into childhood: Sergei Prokofiev’s “Cinderella” is, alongside “Romeo and Juliet,” one of his best-known ballets, while Maurice Ravel brings to life characters from Charles Perrault’s fairy-tale collection in “Ma mère l’oye,” such as “Sleeping Beauty,” “Tom Thumb,” and “Beauty and the Beast.”
