Abstract
Giacomo Puccini’s one-act opera "Gianni Schicchi" does not end with a tragic operatic death: the body of the wealthy Buoso Donati is already laid out when the curtain rises. His loudly lamenting relatives gather around him. Yet appearances are deceptive: in reality, within this shameless and greedy community of heirs, everyone is looking out only for their own advantage. Director Lilli Fischer expands this lively ensemble piece with a prelude: to music by Puccini, Johann Strauss, Franz Lehár, Emmerich Kálmán and Giuseppe Verdi, she stages in the first part of the evening a dazzling night at the ball centred around the extravagant Buoso Donati and his family. The cunning outsider Gianni Schicchi observes the goings-on within this family closely. When he is called upon to distribute the inheritance fairly, he proves to be the most shameless of them all. Ustina Dubitsky conducts the International Opera Studio and the Musikkollegium Winterthur through this two-part evening, which ranges from the operetta waltz to the beloved Puccini aria "Oh mio babbino caro".
