Abstract
A time in the future. Mankind is threatened by media overkill. The communications media have gone off the rails. Like a tidal wave, they have taken on a life of their own and become an apocalyptic menace that can no longer be controlled. An overstretched “world government” decides to evacuate the planet; the Earth should be left to its own devices until it has regenerated itself. Before departure, there is hectic activity at the space station: memories of things left behind on Earth, slogans for the future, fears and yearnings are posted. Yet only a degenerate form of communication is possible.
The space ship that is supposed to bring people to the planet Elpisonia takes off. Everyone abandons Earth. However, a man and a woman are accidentally left behind. They are the last humans on Earth. When they realise their situation, they are initially panic-stricken and overwrought, but then come closer to one another and learn a new – or rather old, merely lost – form of communication: physical contact, silence, truly getting to know one another.
With the grotesquely exaggerated musical theatre project Last Call, we continue our series of operas commissioned from Swiss composers, which we launched last year with Xavier Dayer’s Der Traum von Dir (The Dream of You). Born in Rapperswil in 1978, Michael Pelzel is one of the most successful Swiss composers of his generation. After various awards, he won the sponsorship award of the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation in 2017. Last Call, written in collaboration with the Lucerne author Dominik Riedo, is Michael Pelzel’s first musical theatre project.
