Abstract
Her last appearance at Opernhaus Zürichwas nearly twenty-five years ago. Angela Gheorghiu – who at that point was at the very beginning of her career – appeared as Mimì in Claus Helmut Dore’s production of Giacomo Puccini’s La bohème. Today she is considered one of the most important singers of our time, celebrated not only as Mimì, but also as Tosca, Adriana Lecouvreur and Violetta in La traviata. In her recital on September 23, Angela Gheorghiu spans repertoire from the 18th to the 20th century. Accompanied on the piano by Jeff Cohen, she sings songs by Jean-Philippe Rameau, Giovanni Paisiello, Vincenzo Bellini, Gaetano Donizetti, Ottorino Respighi and Sergei Rachmaninoff. She nearly always reserves a place of honor for songs from her homeland of Romania in her concerts, and in Zurich she will perform compositions by George Stephănescu and Tiberiu Brediceanu.
