Abstract

Péter Eötvös’ "Angels in America" leads us into the America of the late 1980s – a time when the AIDS epidemic reached its tragic peak. The characters of this episodic drama are united by a deep human longing for connection, as well as by existential experiences of fear, guilt and loneliness. At its centre stands Prior Walter: terminally ill and abandoned by his partner, he experiences feverish dreams that culminate in threatening visions of angels – until he ultimately finds great inner strength. Despite its serious subject matter, Eötvös’ score is permeated by subtle humour; floating soundscapes, everyday noises and Broadway sounds unfold an almost hypnotic effect. The International Opera Studio brings this extraordinary work to the stage as its Swiss premiere. The production is directed by the renowned singer and director Angela Denoke.
